Political bargains undermine Brazilian progress

Vote-buying accusations against the ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) have rocked the government in recent weeks. The opposition, which now reclaims the moral high ground, believes it has a sound case against the government and its allies. The bribery scheme, however, is just another example of the intricate relationships between the executive, legislature, publicly owned companies and private interests. The case illustrates the continuing horse-trading behind Brazilian politics and that corruption is a cross-party disease which afflicts the whole of the country's political spectrum.
